Monsanto’s Roundup may be linked to fatal kidney disease, new study suggests

A heretofore inexplicable fatal, chronic kidney disease that has affected poor farming regions around the globe may be linked to the use of biochemical giant Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide in areas with hard water, a new study has found. The new study was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Researchers suggest that Roundup, or glyphosate, becomes highly toxic to the kidney once mixed with “hard” water or metals like arsenic and cadmium that often exist naturally in the soil or are added via fertilizer. Hard water contains metals like calcium, magnesium, strontium, and iron, among others. On its own, glyphosate is toxic, but not detrimental enough to eradicate kidney [...]

Consumer empowerment should be central in G.M.O. labeling debate

The cornerstone of our capitalist market, for better or worse, is consumer choice. And choice is meaningless if consumers are not able to make informed decisions. The debate over genetically modified organisms (G.M.O.’s) used in our foods has been long and controversial with those decrying “frankenfood” railing against those portraying the process as the savior from food shortages and high food prices. The battle over labeling these foods has been gaining significant traction in recent weeks, with states like Colorado putting labeling initiatives on their ballots for the upcoming elections. Food Safety Expert: GMO products cause cancer and obesity’

Russia is firm: no genetically modified organisms in food production, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture Nikolay Fyodorov stated at the All-Russian Meeting of Agrarians. GMO-foods controversies between scientists, ecologists and producers have a long history. Russia, which is now going organic, has faced these problems just recently.  The battle is being waged by two camps: while scientists lack arguments and evidence that GMO is harmful, huge and powerful production corporation have resources and political links. Scientists say they will need another couple of decades for a comprehensive research, but some threats are obvious already now, says Biology Professor and international expert on eco and [...]

Glyphosate. The Cause Of Celiac Epidemic?

by Tami Canal Celiac disease and gluten intolerance are a rising problem with an estimated 350 million suffering from symptoms including nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes and depression. It is a multifactorial disease associated with numerous nutritional deficiencies and reproductive issues as well as an increased risk of kidney failure, thyroid disease and cancer. New studies are pointing to glyphosate, the main component in Monsanto’s best selling herbicide Round Up, as the culprit. In the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology (Vol. 6(4): 159-184) Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff point to the pervasive use of glyphosate as a crop desiccant which is infiltrating the food supply [...]

March Against Monsanto: It’s More Than Just GMO

by Tami Canal Many presume the March Against Monsanto is a protest about GMO. While food plays a very big role in the global protest, there are many insidious tentacles to the biotech giant. MAM strives to expose the deep corruption and connect the dots. From Blackwater to Agent Orange, to protest GMO as the only wrong of Monsanto is to shake the leaves of the tree. MAM seeks to destroy the root. Blackwater and Monsanto Blackwater became notorious during the Iraq war for its mercenaries’ violence against Iraqi civilians and their unaccountability to local or military law. Blackwater’s most notorious incident took place on Sept. 16, 2007 in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, which was [...]

Avoid Eating Genetically Engineered Foods

This blog is part of a series that explores the themes and issues raised in Farmed and Dangerous, a 4-part satirical web series exploring issues related to the food system and industrial agriculture. Why are thousands of physicians advising patients to avoid eating GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) [1] and how did these high-risk foods get onto the market in the first place? The answers are disturbing, even shocking, but may help you get healthy and stay healthy. Foods with added bacterial or viral genes were quietly slipped into your diet two decades ago. Using the excuse that GMOs weren’t that much different, the FDA didn’t require labels or even a single safety study from GMO makers like Monsanto. [...]

New York State Likely To Be Next In Quest For GMO Food Labeling

By Dan FlynnVia Food Safety News Labeling food containing genetically modified ingredients might be a federal issue at some point, but the states are not done with it yet. Next month, two state capitals within easy earshot of the major media outlets – Albany, NY, and Annapolis, MD – are going to be holding public hearings on serious GMO labeling bills. Until those states and others make their own decisions, it’s unlikely that labeling advocates are going to want to turn decisions on the matter over to the much-maligned U.S. Congress.Moving the GMO battle to Washington, D.C., is the idea of the powerful Grocery Manufacturers Association. It has enlisted  28 food and agricultural organizations to help persuade [...]
