Activist Group Working to Create Map of Toxic, Roundup Laden Parks and Playgrounds

glyphosate parks

A glyphosate spraying map of city parks in New York City created by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir.

While the World Health Organization has deemed glyphosate to be a probable human carcinogen, the vast majority of parks, golf courses, and neighborhoods still spray the chemical, and Monsanto’s Roundup which contains it, in large quantities and in an extremely consistent fashion.

Despite the declaration, and countless reported cases of cancers, Parkinson’s and other diseases related to glyphosate and other pesticides, the sprayings have continued.

Even as some places, most recently the country of Malta, decide enough is enough and announce plans to ban glyphosate, little has been done to shine a spotlight on the problem of glyphosate over-spraying in the United States.

But now a noted activist group is creating a project designed to spread awareness on this long-overlooked problem.

Mapping Glyphosate Danger Zones Across the U.S.

Reverend Billy Talen is not your typical preacher, but the leader of the pro-organic, anti-Monsanto Stop Shopping Choir is certainly making a difference.

Recently, he and his group filed Freedom of Information Act requests in order to uncover the times and the locations of glyphosate spraying events in the Five Boroughs of New York City, as a way to protect local kids.

Since then, their project for mapping areas being sprayed with glyphosate and other harmful chemicals (see this link for more information and to donate) has grown to something even bigger, spreading to five major cities across the United States.

As their Generosity.com page tells it:

“Our map will expose 100,000 toxic sites where Monsanto’s Roundup and Glyphosate are sprayed in parks, playgrounds and public spaces…

“Over 13.42 billion pounds of glyphosate have been sprayed on our planet in the past decade. Glyphosate use has risen exponentially since the introduction of genetically modified crops…”

As the page, which has raised a small percentage of its goal of $50,000, notes, the EPA is holding a public hearing on glyphosate on October 18.

Considering that glyphosate use is so commonplace in the United States and pro-Monsanto forces are everywhere in our government and Congress, going for a ban seems unrealistic at this point in time.

But Talen and his group know the importance of continuing to spread awareness and to build a case against the chemical-intensive, environmentally and health-destructive farming system that is currently seen as “conventional.”

The EPA is holding a public hearing on glyphosate on October 18th.

“We want to present our map as evidence. Scientific studies show that Glyphosate is carcinogenic and toxic,” the Generosity.com page states. “Glyphosate is persistent in our blood, bodies, soil and water. It is in our breast milk and most organic foods. It is ubiquitous. Glyphosate has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, birth defects, celiac disease, allergies and asthma.”

“It only costs one dollar to reveal one public place that has been sprayed with our tax dollars.  One dollar includes paying for the public record, scanning, entering, uploading and placing one skull and crossbones on our map.”
